ATAGO's New Polarimeter/Saccharimeter Gets Rave Reviews From Sugar Producers

ATAGO released its state of the art SAC-i Automatic Polarimeter/Saccharimeter in April of 2013. It has already received rave reviews from sugar producers around the world.

The SAC-i has been a big hit especially in Brazil, the sugar production capital of the world (which produced 455,000,000 tons of sugar in 2011, according to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization.) Three Brazilian sugar factories – Cosan’s branches in both Costa Pinto and Bonfirm, and  Guarani in Andrade – tried the SAC-i before its official release. All three factories were impressed by the unit’s intuitive touch screen display and helpful, time-saving features, such as a detachable flow cell, which quickly cycles samples and cleaning solution through the unit.
 

In addition to positive user feedback, the SAC-i Polarimeter has passed the rigorous approval process of the Brazilian sugarcane growers association, CONSECANA. During testing, the instrument demonstrated exceptional repeatability and accuracy – even with turbid liquids that are sometimes difficult to measure.

Polarimeters are used to determine the quality of sugar throughout its refining processes, from freshly-squeezed sugarcane juice to refined white sugar. They do so by projecting polarized light through the sample substance, which is usually housed in a glass observation tube. All ATAGO observation tubes for the SAC-i have been precisely measured to ensure the most accurate reading possible. The SAC-i is rated to measure within ±0.005° (for optical rotation) and ±0.015°Z (for the ISS, the international sugar scale.)

Saccharimeters, on the other hand, are polarimeters that have been coupled with a refractomer, which measure the refraction of light through a substance. With both units, sugar producers can find the purity of their substances. The SAC-i was designed to be used in conjunction with ATAGO’s RX Digital Benchtop Refractometers, which are among the most advanced in the world.
